IS THAT YOUR INSPIRATION OR YOUR EGO SPEAKING?

Do you know when your desire to do something is stemming from ego gratification versus when it’s truly responding to inspiration from within?

Working with people who want more out of their lives, I see how so many of us are deeply affected by the celebrity culture we live in.

Our idea of ‘making it’ usually involves a lot of money and fame we see being lavished on entertainers and sports figures.

Now, nothing against thinking big, but this false vision of success can make it hard for us to set the goals and pursue the path that will truly fulfil us in life.

Such cultural brainwashing causes us to question ourselves if we aim for achievements that are less grand than total physical, emotional and financial perfection.

We often think that a big goal stems from inner inspiration, when it’s really just an ego-motivation attempt to prove self-worth.

This doesn’t mean that everyone who has the drive to achieve great things is doing so to be famous or is trying to validate self-worth by gaining stock in others’ opinions.

It would however be interesting to see how many such stardom seekers would still pursue their purported goals if there was little pay or recognition involved.

The few that would stick around are inspired – the rest are getting a need met.

I am not saying that the desire to be famous or making a lot of money is a ‘bad’ thing, I only mean to show you which feelings and inner motivations will help you attain ease and satisfaction.

This kind of thinking illustrates to us exactly what keeps us checking somewhere outside of ourselves for answers.

This can set us up to be a bottomless pit of need for external validation.

Hey, we’re human, a need to external validation is going to happen once in a while, but you can save yourself a lot of strife if you learn to feel the difference between ego and inspiration.

When feelings of insecurity strike, keep in mind what ego feels like and what inspiration feels like.

Inspiration comes from within, and ego depends on others to feel at ease and satisfied.

Inspiration will always feel less tumultuous than ego.
