GET BACK IN TOUCH WITH YOUR FEELINGS

By now you’ve assessed what kinds of things may keep you living a ‘treadmill existence’, and you’ve got a clear picture of what keeps you from having the time for the things that matter to you most.

In my experience as a coach, when people are pulled in several directions this way, it is hard to create a significant forward motion, goal attainment, and satisfaction in life.

The antidote is to get back in touch with what you truly want and get back to feeling again.

When you make contact with your feelings, you can sense when you have betrayed yourself by taking on yet another obligation that distances you from your goals and priorities.

Obviously, obligations like turning up for work in the morning can’t be avoided, but when you get back in touch with what you feel, you may have to admit that even your job could warrant some changing.

Obligations become ‘should’s’ in your life – the things you think you must do and over which you think you have no power.

It is the ‘should’s’ that keep you away from what is important to you.

Here’s what you do:

  • Memorise your list of priorities
  • Use the memorised list as a measuring stick against every demand on your time
  • Arrived at the point where you can sense your true priorities in your cells

Eventually, you will not let anything come between you and what truly matter.

You can change the list in the preceding exercise over time, but always keep it at five items. It’s critical that you trust this feeling to feel the difference between a true desire and everything else that vies for your attention.
